Why convert PNG to AVIF?
The comparison to the WebP version holds: flat colors, sharp text, and transparency all compress predictably regardless of which format you pick. What changes is the ceiling — AVIF's newer encoder typically lands smaller than WebP at the same visual quality, so if squeezing out the smallest possible file matters more than encoding speed, this is the better default.
Quality still starts at 100% instead of 80% for the same reason as the WebP converter — this kind of image shows compression artifacts before a photo would. Push it down afterward only for a specific file where the size savings are worth more than perfect edges.

Worth being blunt about, because the quality slider starting at 100 implies otherwise: AVIF has a lossless mode, and this converter does not use it. Even at 100 the encoder is running in lossy mode, tuned as high as it goes. The result will look indistinguishable from your PNG in normal use, but it is not pixel-for-pixel identical, and no setting on this page will make it so.
For a photograph that's exactly what you want. For a logo heading into a brand system, a screenshot that will be diffed, or artwork that will be edited further, it isn't — and PNG or WebP lossless will give you an exact copy that is often smaller anyway, since both are purpose-built for flat colour and sharp edges in a way AVIF's lossless mode never really was.
So when is this the right conversion?
When the file is a PNG but the content is a photograph. That happens constantly — a screenshot of a photo, an export from software that defaults to PNG — and those files are typically several times larger than they need to be, because PNG has to store every pixel of a photo exactly. Converting one to AVIF can cut it by an order of magnitude, and none of the lossless argument above applies, because you were never going to keep photographic detail pixel-exact anyway.
One size caveat: AVIF carries more structural overhead per file than WebP does. Encoding the same flat icon at a fixed quality, we measured WebP coming out smaller at 40 pixels a side and below, with AVIF only pulling ahead from 48 px up. For favicons and very small icons this conversion has nothing to offer.
FAQ
Will the AVIF be pixel-identical to my PNG?
No. This converter encodes AVIF in lossy mode at every setting, including 100. At the top of the range the difference is not something you will see, but it exists. If you need a guarantee of exactness, keep the PNG or convert to WebP instead.
Should I use this for screenshots and logos?
Usually not. Flat colour and sharp text are what lossless formats handle best, and PNG or WebP lossless will typically give you an exact copy at a comparable or smaller size. AVIF earns its place on photographic content, not on graphics.
Does transparency survive?
Yes — AVIF supports an alpha channel, so a transparent background comes through. That part is not a reason to avoid the conversion; the lossy-only point above is.
